- VINEYARD TOUR -

Domaine Vintur is an independent wine producer located on the lower slopes of Mont Ventoux, 33 Km from Avignon. When Graham Shore, a British wine-lover who has lived for part of the year in Provence for over 20 years, bought Domaine Vintur at the end of 2010, it had been under-managed for several years and certain buildings were in need of renovation; what followed can only be described as a labour of love. The combination of Graham’s passion for both wine and Provence, reflected in the quality and level of restoration conducted. The vineyard now boasts a modern purpose-built winery as well as a state of the art boutique and tasting room.

One of the main attractions of Domaine Vintur was the vines. Most of the vines on the 12 ½ hectares in production are 30-60 years old, so fully mature. They therefore have the potential to produce complex wines, with subtle but engaging aromas and flavours. The location is ideal for producing high quality fruit, thanks to a combination of Provençal sunshine, mistral winds and limestone/clay soil. The Southern Rhône has a history of wine making dating back to the ancient Greeks, who brought over and planted the first vines, and the Romans, who expanded the vineyards.

When he took over the vineyard, Graham began a programme of improving the soils and changing the agricultural methods.  The Domaine stopped using insecticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilisers.  From the start of 2014 it registered for conversion to organic certification and commenced strictly organic production.  All wines produced from vintage 2017 onwards are certified organic.

The wine-making goes from strength to strength. As early as 2012 the Domaine won awards for both white and red wines.   Since the start of the new regime we have won seven gold medals, four silver medals and the Trophy for the best white wine of the Appellation. This included winning gold medals at the last three Millésime Bio, the world’s largest and most prestigious organic wine show.

“This is a domaine to keep an eye on.”

TERROIR TOUR EXPERIENCE

The name Domaine Vintur comes from a god of the local Gauls, Vintur, who was the god of light and the mountains. Julius Caesar believed Vintur to be the equivalent of Apollo, the god of the sun and music. Given our location, with the sunny Provençal climate and Mont Ventoux so close by, and the fact that some believe “Ventoux” to be derived from Vintur, this name fit seamlessly with Graham’s vision, which thanks to hard work and a seemingly infinite passion is now becoming a reality.

"A very good, full bodied red wine with a great taste... It has a bit of spice and is well balanced. It has ripe, dark fruits and a good balancing of acidity."

This wine is the flagship of the Domaine, made from grapes selected from the best and oldest vines. The natural flavours and tannins of the fruit are enhanced by careful use of aging in French oak barrels.
